Toshiba’s Commitment to Reducing the Environmental Impact of our Business and Production Activities

Toshiba telecommunication products are built with green in mind. Toshiba has a long and storied history of thoughtful, environmentally conscious products. Over the years, Toshiba has taken a less is more approach by minimizing waste, reducing energy consumption and using recycled materials. Its all part of an effort to create innovative, efficient products that remain environmentally responsible throughout their lifecycles. The following are just some of the aspects Toshiba telecommunication's Divison green approach.

Environmentally Conscious Products
Environmentally Conscious Products (ECPs) is an eco-friendly program that aims to double the environmental performance of all Toshiba products by 2010. Toshiba’s Telecommunications Systems Division is dedicated to making incremental improvements in our manufacturing process and to designing ECPs with minimal environmental impact. Regulatory Compliance
Going above and beyond regulatory compliance. Toshiba prides itself on being a responsible manufacturer and goes above and beyond by diligently following the guidelines established by several European directives.

WEEE Directive
The European directive on waste from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) protects the environment by promoting the reuse, recycling and recovery of electronic materials. Toshiba proudly follows WEEE regulations.

RoHS Directive
The European directive on the restriction of use of certain hazardous chemicals (RoHS) is designed to reduce the use of substances that may pose risks to human health or the environment. Toshiba has long followed the guidelines of the RoHS directive and limits the following hazardous materials in its products:

• Lead
• Mercury
• Cadmium
• Hexavalent chromium
• Polybrominated biphenyls
• Polybrominated diphenyl ethers

Toshiba meets or exceeds high environmental standards, like RoHS, WEEE, and JIG . The result? We’ve kept tons of toxic chemicals and other substances out of the ecosystem. Toshiba’s Strata® CIX™ systems and 5000-series business IP telephones and digital telephones are RoHS compatible. In addition, Toshiba Strata CIX IP communication systems are compliant with environmental guidelines such as those defined in the Joint Industry Guide issued by the Electronics Industry Alliance (EIA).

Factor T: Toshiba Exceeds FY2012 Benchmarks for Eco-Efficiency
Dedicated improvement in material selection, parts procurement and the use of innovative manufacturing processes for Toshiba Strata CIX products helped Toshiba gain a 3.1 eco-efficiency rating over benchmarks for FY2000 and propelled Toshiba Strata CIX products well ahead of Toshiba corporation targets for FY2012.

In particular, Strata CIX40 and DP5000 digital phones together achieved a Factor-T score of 3.91 (overall Toshiba Group target for FY2012 is 2.3). As a whole, the Strata CIX family attained a T-Factor score of 3.1, which is also beyond Toshiba FY2012 target.

Reduced Use of Hazardous Chemicals Meets Stringent Industry Guidelines
Toshiba's Strata CIX systems and 5000-series business IP and digital telephones are RoHS compatible. In addition, all new Toshiba Strata CIX products are compatible with environmental guidelines such as those defined in the Joint Industry Guide issued by the Electronics Industry Alliance (EIA). Eliminated all chemicals targeted in Joint Industry Guide (JIG) Section 15 from our manufactured parts. Eliminated PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and BFR (brominated flame retardants) from surface plastics in the 5000-Series IP and digital telephones. Eliminated PVC from spiral and line phone cords in the 5000-Series digital telephones.

5000-Series Digital Telephones Use Up to 10% Less Energy
Efficient energy consumption is a key initiative of Vision 2050. This year, Toshiba released the fully-featured 5000-Series digital telephones.

These telephones consume approximately 10%³ less energy than earlier series, contributing to greater efficiency and lower cost of ownership. Select 5000-series digital telephones also offer further efficiency with an automatic backlight OFF sleep function.

Robust Migration Strategy Reduces e-Waste
Since 1993, Toshiba’s Telecommunication Systems Division has pursued a comprehensive migration strategy aimed at innovation and value for our customers. Adhering to such high quality standards avoids needless e-waste during system upgrades and expansions, since customers are able to retain many interface units and endpoints.

The most recent introduction of the Strata CIX1200 system, for instance, provides a smooth upgrade path from CIX670 systems. Depending on the configuration, upgrades to CIX1200 can be as simple as replacing the processor card and allowing customers to keep their current cabinets, interface cards, and endpoints.

Product Design Policy Incorporates 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle)
Toshiba’s Green Design Policy actively promotes the 3Rs to promote the reduction, reuse and intelligent recycling of limited natural resources.

For example, as a result of innovative molding techniques, 5000-Series IP and digital business telephones require no paint or surface coatings, yet still provide exceptional durability and a professional look and feel.

3R design standards also inform our product packaging design. Toshiba eliminated foam polystyrene materials from interior packaging materials and replaced them with eco-friendly, recyclable materials with no loss to product protection.

Toshiba participates in a number of government programs, including the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Plug-In to eCycling program, and independent programs such as eBay's Rethink Initiative.
