Receives a 2008 INTERNET TELEPHONY Excellence Award

IRVINE, Calif., October 28, 2008 —Toshiba America Information Systems Inc., Telecommunication Systems Division (Toshiba — www.telecom.toshiba.com) announced today that Technology Marketing Corporation (TMC) has named Toshiba’s family of Strata® CIX™ IP business communication systems a recipient of a 2008 INTERNET TELEPHONY Excellence Award presented by INTERNET TELEPHONY magazine (www.itmag.com). “We are proud that Toshiba has been honored with a 2008 INTERNET TELEPHONY Excellence Award,” said Brian Metherell, vice president and general manager for Toshiba America Information Systems, Telecommunication Systems Division. “This award is especially meaningful because it is in recognition of the contributions of our Toshiba Strata VoIP system to our customers.”

“For our customer Lake Highland Preparatory School, we worked with Authorized Toshiba Dealer Black Box Network Services of Orlando, Fla., to deliver a system that met the school’s goals of being virtually lightning-proof, improving efficiencies, and saving more than $100,000 over the first two years,” he added.

“With customer accolades for its Strata CIX IP business communication systems, Toshiba has proven its outstanding contribution to IP communications and delivered a winning solution,” said Rich Tehrani, editor-in-chief of INTERNET TELEPHONY.

Toshiba Success Story: Lake Highland Preparatory School
Founded in 1970, Lake Highland Preparatory School (LHPS) is an independent college preparatory school located in Orlando, Fla., that educates 2,050 students in grades Pre-K through 12. The school’s mission is to instill Christian values, inspire patriotism, develop future leaders, and prepare students for college and lifelong learning through academically challenging programs and affirming competitive experiences.

The Challenge: Florida is the lightning capital of the United States, and the school faced downtime of its telephone system nearly every summer when lightning hit and shorted-out the copper wiring that connects its buildings. The school wanted a system that would be lightning resistant, would grow with them, network its buildings campus-wide, and handle the thousands of calls it receives each week. They also wanted a system that could be remotely administered from the technology manager’s office, plus affordable price, cost savings and a strong warranty.

The Solution: To create a lightning-resistant system as well as prepare for future growth, Authorized Toshiba Dealer Black Box Network Services of Orlando, Fla., designed a system with four Toshiba Strata CIX IP business communication systems for the main buildings plus an additional eight remote locations supported entirely by IP telephones. All 12 sites are networked using Toshiba’s Strata Net via IP over fiber, thus entirely eliminating the conductive copper path between the buildings that was responsible for lightning-related outages of the phone system.

System Benefits: The new Toshiba communications system eliminated downtime due to lightning strikes by using VoIP over fiber and eliminated copper wiring between buildings campus-wide; enabled in-house administration with Toshiba’s eManager®, allowing the system administrator to manage the entire system from her desktop; supplied a mix of IP, digital and console telephones to ensure that the users have the right telephone for their needs, using digital for mobile and remote users and digital for static workers to save costs and reduce demand on the LAN; and provided the best price via migration and warranty, which enabled the re-use of the school’s older equipment saving more than $72,000, plus about $24,000 annually in lightning repair costs.

Bottom Line: Toshiba delivered on the school’s objectives of having a system that was lightning resistant, and there has been absolutely no lightning damage and no downtime since the system was installed. The system also delivered VoIP benefits, including eliminating the conductive copper connections as well as giving the benefits of IP phone mobility without service calls. In addition, centralized voice mail also helps improve internal and external communication. The system delivered cost savings of more than $100,000 in the first two years and continues to deliver ongoing savings of $7,000 annually.
