Toshiba Enhances SoftIPT Softphone, Now Enabling More Simultaneous Calls and Echo Cancellation for Windows Vista
IRVINE, Calif., May 14, 2008 Toshiba America Information Systems Inc., Telecommunication Systems Division (Toshiba — www.telecom.toshiba.com) today announced the availability of its newly enhanced Toshiba SoftIPT® softphone (Version 2.2), which enables users to access their desktop telephone features via their laptop computers by connecting to the enterprise’s Toshiba Strata® CIX™ IP business communications system through 802.11 wireless networks or virtually anywhere there is Internet access. The new SoftIPT 2.2 now supports the G729a codec for PCs only, which allows for more simultaneous calls and also supports acoustic echo cancellation on Microsoft® Windows Vista® on an Intel-based platform. The new acoustic echo canceller allows users to use their PCs’ built-in microphones.
“Toshiba’s SoftIPT softphone gives Strata CIX users the ability to take their telephones virtually anywhere there is Internet access,” said Eric Abing, product manager, Toshiba America Information Systems, Telecommunication Systems Division. “The new SoftIPT 2.2 provides the ideal solution for mobile and remote workers as well as those who move around the company campus and supports Toshiba’s commitment to mobile empowerment for its Strata CIX users.”
New to Toshiba SoftIPT softphone (version 2.2) are:
- New support of G729a codec, which allows users to place more simultaneous calls than G711. The G729a codec requires less bandwidth than the G711 codec (both are supported).
- New support of acoustic echo cancellation for PCs running Microsoft Windows Vista using an Intel processor. This allows the user to take advantage of echo cancellation when using the PC’s built-in microphone rather than a peripheral headset or microphone device.
Toshiba SoftIPT 2.2 also supports all SoftIPT 2.0 features including:
- Takes full advantage of Toshiba’s new IP User Mobility feature, which allows a user to log into his or her SoftIPT softphone even when the extension is being used by the desktop IP telephone or on another mobile device. IP User Mobility also allows users who share a common workstation to log in and use the SoftIPT with their own individual extensions and profiles.
- Allows SoftIPT to be run in the background (in the system tray) and still be active and easily accessible.
- Fully supports the Toshiba Video Communication Solution (VCS®), an affordable, easy-to-use video communications solution that provides video conferencing and collaboration.
- Integrates with Microsoft Outlook®, including support for multiple Outlook profiles, enhanced contact search capabilities, and click-to-cal features.
- Provides survivability capabilities, allowing the user to connect to another Toshiba VoIP interface in the same system or in another system in any location to provide an ongoing connection should the link to the primary IP interface go down.
- Allows for two IP addresses so when the SoftIPT starts up, it will first try to connect via the primary IP address. If the attempt is unsuccessful, it will automatically try the secondary IP address.
- Integrates with GN Netcom 8120 and 9350 USB headsets.
- Delivers full compatibility with Toshiba’s complete line of telephones, including IP desk telephones, mobile telephones and digital desk telephones.
- Supports and extends the features of Toshiba’s IP and digital telephones, including: Unified Messaging soft keys and basic telephony features (Park, Hold, Transfer, Multiple DNs, Redial, Conferencing, caller ID, off-hook call announce, call record and much more).
System Compatibility
Compatible with Toshiba’s entire family of Strata CIX IP business communications systems, Toshiba SoftIPT 2.2 wirelessly extends the features and functionality of Toshiba desktop telephones to suitably equipped PCs running Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows XP®, Microsoft Windows® 2000/2003. The SoftIPT is also fully compatible with Toshiba’s IP User Mobility feature and is a supported IP station for Toshiba’s Video Communication Solution.
